Radon Gas In Homes And Lung Cancer
By Mark J. Donovan, Fri Dec 9th

Unsuspecting homeowners may not realize the full risksassociated with gas in their homes. Increasing evidencesuggests that gas is the most underestimated cause of LungCancer. gas can occur anywhere, however some areas of theUnited States are known to have abnormally high levels of thispotentially deadly gas. Though gas can be found in everystate, the highest concentration levels are in the Northeast andthe upper Midwest of the United States.

If gas can be dissipated from homes and into theatmosphere it is relatively harmless. However, when entershomes and stays trapped, which can frequently happen withtoday’s more tightly sealed homes; the gas can become a healthproblem.

The gas typically enters a home from a basement. If thebasement is not adequately vented to the outside atmosphere thegas can build up to high levels within the home.

There are differing

opinions about the minimum safe levels, however the evidence continues to grow that may be themost underestimated cause of lung cancer. gas may beparticularly more dangerous to children, smokers and those whospend much of their time indoors.

When purchasing a new home, make sure a Home Inspection isperformed and that the Home Inspector checks for levels. The cost for a test is minimal and well worth it. If highlevels of gas are detected proper ventilation systemsshould be added to the home. The costs of such ventilationsystems are again quite reasonable.
