Newcastle United V West Ham United - Match Review
By Stuart Couser
Scoreline : 2 - 2

Advantage wasted as Hammers settle for another draw

A poor second half performance resulting from a series of defensive errors ensured the Hammers remain in the relegation zone.

West Ham started the game well and continued to dominate right from the outset. With just 22 minutes played, goals from Carlton Cole and Marlon Harewood left the visitors cruising.

Just when it seemed that the Hammers would enjoy a 2-goal cushion at the break, the Magpie’s struck back with a controversial goal from James Milner. Newcastle continued to attack after the break and their strategy paid off after Nolberto Solano slotted home a 53rd-minute penalty.

With 2-points robbed, the under pressure Hammers’ manager Alan Curbishley looked distressed. In the 65th minute, West Ham debutant Calum Davenport's header goal was disallowed for a push. This infuriated Curbishley who finally directed his anger at referee Uriah Rennie, after the game.

Curbs blasted: "I am so disappointed with their first goal. It changed the whole face of the game. The linesman put his flag up, but because Scott Parker did not touch it, he did not give it.” "I do not know what Scott is doing if he is not gaining an advantage. The rule is if you

are looking to gain an advantage, you are in an offside position.”

Toon boss Glenn Roeder, enjoying his team’s recent success in the premiership, agreed that further explanation is required on the current interpretation of the offside rule.

He said: "That is how the rule is now. It is very much a grey area and I do not think it is the referees' fault at all. They apply the law as they see it and as they have been told to apply the law.”

Certainly with a string of draws under his belt, a spot in the next season’s premier league seems a destination far-ahead for Hammers’ boss.
