Preventing Heart Disease – It’s As Simple As What You Eat

Deaths related to heart disease have been on the rise for many years, and heart disease has been the cause for more fatalities than anything else in the United States for a long time. It’s no longer news, but the fact that few people have the cardiovascular health that they should is constantly hammered into our brains. We all know that getting up and outside and getting regular exercise is crucial to building up the strength of our heart, but sometimes we forget that there are many foods and that can actually play a pivotal role in reducing our risk of cardiovascular disease.
Let’s begin by examining which affect our heart and blood vessels. Since we were young we’ve been told about the importance of our daily vitamins, so it shouldn’t shock anyone to find out that some of them can help keep us safe from the dangers of a weak cardiovascular system. Specifically, the B family of have been shown to have a crucial role in the function of our heart and arteries, and deficiencies of these (particularly B9 and B6) can have adverse effects. A lack of B can lead to high levels of homocysteine, which can damage and weaken arteries, making us more susceptible to cardiovascular disease. When our bodies have enough of these it can effectively regulate this substance and prevent arterial damage.
Foods are also very important. Keep in mind that everything you put into your body ends up getting absorbed and used, so nutritious foods can have a dramatic effect on your health. When looking for foods that help to keep our heart healthy, we have many options to consider, and all of them should be looked into to help maximize the benefits to your heart.
Most fruits are good for our bodies, and blueberries are no exception. These little treats happen to be loaded with anthocyanin, a natural antioxidant. We all know that antioxidants are key to our health, and that they protect our bodies from premature aging by fighting the damage done by free radicals. What many people aren’t aware of, however, is that they can also reduce your risk of developing certain forms of cancer, and help to protect you against heart disease. There’s really no reason
not to throw blueberries in your trail mix bag, toss them in with a salad, or eat a handful every day.
Fish is another good option for maintaining a healthy heart. Fish happen to be loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids. Scientific studies have shown these fatty acids as being instrumental in reducing cholesterol levels, directly helping your heart and reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease. There are also fish oil supplements, which provide these Omega-3 fatty acids.
Make sure to also look for foods high in dietary fiber content. These have been shown to help in reducing cholesterol and preventing future heart problems. Make sure to eat plenty of high fiber foods such as fruits like apples and bananas, whole-wheat breads and pastas, and veggies such as broccoli and cabbage. Fiber is found in plenty of different kinds of food, making it one of the easiest things to get more of in your diet. Snack on fruits between meals, eat a whole grain cereal for breakfast, or steam up some vegetables for dinner!
There are obviously a lot of things that we know to leave out of our diet in order keep our hearts beating at their best, but there are equally as many things that we can include to our diet to actually help our hearts. Making sure you get proper heart nutrition and taking the right can go a long way to reducing your risk of heart disease, and taken together with proper exercise can make you a whole different person. It’s never too early to start taking care of your heart, and the sooner in your life you start these habits, the better off your heart will be and can literally be the difference between life and death.
