Erm Not Just For The "big Guys" Anymore, Small Business Rights By Marilee Veniegas, Wed Dec 7th
Small Business Rights Management (SBRM) is a term which reflectsthe shift ERM (Enterprise Rights Management) technology hastaken as awareness of industry compliance issues and protectionof original works has evolved and become implicit withinbusinesses of under 50 employees. From published manuscripts tooriginal cookie recipes, protecting original works, customer orpatient records isn't just "good business," but in manyindustries a matter of compliance. The question is how can smallfirm businesses invest in ERM software at its current exorbitantcost? The realm of protected digital documents, like many businesssolution advances has traditionally only been available toprivileged large corporate enterprise businesses. This is nolonger the case. Technology mandates that it catch up with the populace. In theearly 1980s, first generation laptops are a far cry from thelightweight Apple PowerBooks, or Dells. ERM software has itselfhas begun to slim down and no longer appears like the bulkyover-priced, 24 pound Osborne1 (the first laptop computer).
Rights management solutions can now be for small to medium-sizedbusinesses or sole-proprietorships too. SBRM solutions providebusinesses of a smaller scale an equal level of user rightsmanagement and encryption previously available to largeenterprise business. Standard ERM or SBRM software gives content authors the power todetermine how recipients may use their email and documents. Forexample, senders can prevent unauthorized distribution (noforwarding, printing) and prevent unauthorized editing (no cut, copy, paste) of content, i.e. copy prevention. For
some industries like finance, medical and legal, keepingcommuniqué, client/patient records and data is a matter ofindustry compliance. In finance, Sarbanes-Oxley protectsinvestors and governs corporate responsibility. HIPAA the HealthInsurance Portability and Accountability Act not only protectshealth insurance coverage for workers and their families whenthey change or lose their jobs, but also dictates that patientinformation be kept private. Compliance regulations in suchindustries are a cost of doing business, and are often priceymandates. Government compliance issues for many industries oftenbecomes a burden, forcing small neighborhood clinics, firms andbusinesses go under due the financial stress. Compliance as it concerns digital data is finally catching up tothe widening commercial sector which is highly impacted by thesuccess of small businesses. Small firms dealing with complianceissues can turn to SBRM solutions to bridge the gap betweenstaying current with industry regulations and staying inbusiness. - - - - - - - - - - Resources for further reading: Privacy Rights - http://www.privacyrights.org Wikipedia Articles: DRM - Digital Rights Management-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management CopyPrevention (and DRM)-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_prevention About the author:Marilee Veniegas is an alumni of the University ofWashington she joined the Marketing team at Essential Security Software, Inc. in 2005.She also serves as one of the ESS site editors for "I Want MyESS!"
