Is There Such A Thing As A Crohn’s Diet? By Sharon Dobson Crohn’s patients often want to know what type of crohn’s they can follow to help them feel better. There are foods that can make patients feel much better and then there are ones that can severely aggravated the situation.
When the wrong foods are ingested, bouts of suffering with loose stool and cramping can become much worse. Sufferers who want to follow a specific crohn’s should avoid spicy food, many products containing milk, alcohol, anything with preservatives, and many grains. Though there is no scientific research behind any for Crohn’s, you do want to get the most from your meals.
If you have done any research on foods for Crohn’s patients, you have probably come across the Specific Carb Diet, otherwise known as SCD. This does not claim to cure the inflammation that comes with Crohn’s but it may be able to help reduce troubling symptoms. You may find it hard to stick this for any extended period of time as it is fairly restrictive, but if it works for you, you might just want to try a little harder. Some suggest you need to stay on this strict until at least one year is passed before you try to reintroduce some foods that have been eliminated.
You might find that the SCD is something like the Atkins diet, but is probably more strict. You should eliminate refined sugars, potatoes, grains, oats, pastas, and white rice. These are all very hard on the digestive system, and make symptoms flare up when ingested. You want to avoid complex carbohydrates and concentrate on eating simple carbs. When the body is faced with complex carbs, more bacteria are present during digestion, and this is what can aggravate some of your symptoms. This is important to remember
if you want to follow a crohn’s diet.
You should also avoid any foods with high fiber content, and anything that is overly greasy or fatty. This can be particularly hard, because like a lot of people, crohn’s patients love these sorts of foods. Milk and milk products are also known to make symptoms of Crohn’s worse, and should be avoided as a part of this Crohn’s diet. You can, however, have most meats as long as they are lean cuts and are not processed. That would include beef, chicken, and pork. You can also have fish, some cheeses, fruits, and honey if you need something sweet. No other sugars are allowed. Eat your meals more frequently, but remember to have smaller portions so your system isn’t overloaded and drink plenty of water.
You should know that the Specific Carb may indeed help you feel better, but there have been no official studies to back this up. There are many patient testimonials you can find that say they have been helped however, and there is really no reason why you can’t try it for yourself. You should remain under doctor care while trying this crohn’s diet, and make sure you keep taking your medicine if your doctor tells you that you should.
