Vermont has a population of about 608,000 in about 6,000 square miles. The capital is Montpelier, and its largest city is Burlington, on Lake Champlain, in the Northwestern portion of the state. Burlington has a population of 38,000 in a metropolitan area of 200,000 people. Vermont is notable for the Green Mountains in the west and Lake Champlain in the northwest. Agriculture contributes $2.6 billion, to the economy of Vermont. Today, most of Vermont's forests consist of second-growth. Of the remaining farm industries, dairy farming is the primary source of agricultural income. Vermont has a series of laws that control development and help sustain Vermont's dairy industry. There were some 1,500 dairy farms in Vermont, recently. Specialty items produced by Vermont include Cabot Cheese, the Vermont Teddy Bear Company, Vermont Butter and Cheese Company, several micro breweries, and Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream. Production varies but can be as high as 400,000 gallons, over 30-percent of U.S. production.

Essex Junction, in the Champlain Valley, not far from Burlington, is the home of the state’s largest private employer, IBM. It provides 25% of all manufacturing jobs in Vermont. It is responsible for $1 billion of the state's annual economy. The plant has 6,000 employees in buildings of 3.3 million square feet and manufacturers computer chips.

Tourism is the state's largest industry. It contributes $4.1 billion to the state's economy or 27% of the gross state product. In winter, the ski resorts Killington Ski Resort, Mad River Glen, and Mount Snow are popular with crowds from Boston, New York and Montreal.

There is a quarrying and mining industry around Rutland and Barre Vermont.
The "Marble Valley" runs north and south up the state, and there is also the "Slate Valley" that runs from just inside New York and meets the Granite Valley. The largest granite quarry in the U.S. is in Rutland, the Rock of Ages Quarry

Vermont is a favorite place for children’s summer camps. Trout draws outdoors lovers to the state. In winter, backcountry skiers visit to travel the length of the state Trail. Vermont state parks are worth visiting in the summer for all recreational activities, and in the winter for skiing. Vermont Days, June 9th and 10th, is the weekend to celebrate the arrival of summer and enjoy a free sample of Vermont’s excellent fishing, state parks, and historic and cultural resources. Saturday, June 9th is free day – the one day in the year when residents and non-residents may go without a license. Events include exploring the Flora of the Notch, at the President Calvin Coolidge state historic site. Other events are Let’s Go clinics at Plymouth State Park, Catherine State Park and Bennington Fish Culture Station.
