Ferrari Prevailed On The U.s. Grand Prix
By Julie Smith

Michael Schumacher made it first to the final line during the U.S. Grand Prix one more time. This is his fourth consecutive victory at the 2.6-mile, 13-turn road circuit at the famed Brickyard. But this year he cleaned up his name after last year’s fiasco where the race was finally run by only six cars due to safety issues around Michelin tires. Fourteen cars didn’t even start the race.

Team Ferrari monopolized the first two positions of the U.S. Grand Prix with Schumacher and Massa as pilots. Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1 champion became the first driver in any series to win five races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Schumacher made a clean start but was surpassed by his teammate Massa down the run into turn one. Fernando Alonso tried to muscle past around the outside of Schumacher in turn one and two but the German stood firm. Alonso, who had won six of the first nine races and four in a row entering the day, and who currently remains as the leader of the F1 Championship, was never in contention and ended up fifth.

For the 24 year old Alonso this is a very

hard course. This time he had a better result since he has finished no better than 15th in three previous races here. Fernando Alonso wasn't competitive in his first Indy in 2001, in a Minardi entry. But his last two tries, 2003 and 2004, were in competitive Renaults.

Alonso didn’t take part in the opening practice session last Friday and waited through almost half the second 60-minute session before finally driving his blue and yellow No. 1 Renault onto the track.

Last Sunday’s was Schumacher’s third victory of the season and number 87 of his career. This victory cut Fernando Alonso’s championship lead from 25 to 19 points with eight races remaining.

The third spot on the podium was for Giancarlo Fisichella from Renault. Jarno Trulli gave Toyota a fourth place. The Spaniard Fernando Alonso ended fifth and Rubens Barrichello came home in sixth place.
